Sapphire engagement rings like Kate Middleton – this is the question of most future brides these days. Recently, a customer came to me and asked if the Diana ring shown at the website can be customized with a bigger center stone? And as always I offered her the stone size she was looking. She was really happy to have a ring that is completely inspired by the famous sapphire engagement ring of Princess Diana.
This wasn’t the first time when I was asked for a Diana inspired ring, as I said, I am very much used to this question. But this time, I was wondering what is so special about the ring and why an ordinary ring became the most famous ring in history.
The Journey of an Heirloom
To get the answer, we have to start the rings journey from 1981. It was the year when Prince Charles was engaged to Lady Diana Spencer. It was said that there were many unusual things about this engagement. The most unusual of all was the ring, which wasn’t selected by Prince Charles as the custom was. Lady Diana, as she was called then, herself picked the engagement ring from the collection then offered by jeweler Garrard. The ring wasn’t unique or exceptional as it should be according to the royal norms. It was an otherwise ordinary or I should say a classic creation that includes a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire prong set in 18K white gold and surrounded by 14 brilliant round diamonds. Although, sapphire was a rich and royal stone and it wasn’t new for a royal engagement ring, the ring sparked the curiosity. The ring at that time cost 28,000 pounds sterling, which was anyways a low amount for any royal ring.
Even though it was one of the many oval sapphire rings, it was especial because Princess Diana chosen it as her engagement ring. Some says she picked it because it reminds her of her mother’s engagement ring while other believes she made the selection to compliment her blue eyes. Whatever the reason was, she loved her ring and never took it off until her divorce.
Resurgence of the Ring
For some time, the ring was off the market but it was never out of people’s mind. And when Prince William presented it to Kate Middleton, there was a jet-speed hike in the demand. Every bride-to-be wanted a Lady Di ring for herself.
Kate became the people’s princess and everything related to her was a style to be religiously followed by fashionistas. It was her remarkable simplicity and graceful fashion that made her one of the most famous style icon. It was said that when she got the ring, she resized it from size H to size I to make sure it perfectly fits on her finger. Kate’s minimalist jewelry style along with the elegant and vibrant blue sapphire made it a symbol of royalty.
Today, whether it’s a romantic proposal or a gift for valentine, every girl wants a ring inspired by the royal heirloom. The ring today is an icon of grace, beauty, purity and heavenly bliss and it is perfect for any girl who likes to flaunt her natural style in a flawless manner.
